Combining elements of strategy with the all-out assault of a real-time battle game, THE UNHOLY WAR has begun. You are on Xsarra, a planet on the brink of war. A peace treaty has been broken between the native Arcanes and the advanced Teknos. You must choose your allegiance (Arcane, Tekno, or a combination of both), your team of seven (there are 14 warriors available) and begin your assault. Select from two modes of play: Combat Mayhem mode, a 3D weapon-based fighting game, or Combat Tactics mode, a chess-like strategy contest where your characters move on a hexagonal board for points. Once you meet an opponent on the board, a battle in real-time ensues. There are 14 different battlefields, each with its own unique terrain, obstacles, and weather conditions. Play a single-player game against the computer or challenge your friend in two-player combat. THE UNHOLY WAR will place you in the heat of an intergalactic battle.

I'm not waiting a week to tell you that I am never ordering from this vendor again. Zero customer service, when I try to contact its not delivered. I appreciate the fact the game came quickly however the game though described as "very good" in condition didn't run in my Xbox and no matter what I did it will not read it. Unholy war for the PS1 is truly one of those amazing games that few people know of. The attention to detail is amazing. Butterflies that flow around when disturbed to actual environmental explosions that may damage/kill. So many things the developers did just worked, especially the game play. Compelling yet simple. There are no crazy combos to remember. Just knowing what each characters strengths & weaknesses are. Also knowing when to strike down your opponent or when to play defense. Playing against the AI on various levels of difficulty fits the levels of expertise. Start off on easy. Then continue to immerse and challenge yourself against the A.I. (This review was written October 2nd, 2003) My roommate picked this game up the very same day he shipped his ex-girlfriend off to California. He picked it up at a pawn shop because he liked, "the cool cover." Fast forward to now, almost a YEAR AND A HALF later, we both STILL play this one game against each other on almost a daily basis (on the PS2 no less!). For the record, I've been a video game junkie since the Atari 2600 was the latest news. Missile Command, Defender, Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, and Grand Theft Auto 3 had their tenures. So did Twisted Metal 2, Black, the Tekken series (all five!) AND the Gran Turismo series (all three!). None can of these games can even come CLOSE to the replay value of Unholy War, and that's just taking into ... (The stragegy mode VS the computer isn't too difficult, even on hard, due to the fact the 'board mode' AI isn't very intelligent at all. Mayhem mode is VERY difficult to beat, and you can only call yourself 'Lord of Unholy War AI' if you can beat Teknos (you) VS All (AI) in mayhem mode.) I have long since stopped playing against the AI (save a 'Teknos VS All' match every once in awhile), but I STILL play against my roommate almost EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! The suprising thing is, we're STILL learning new map strategies, more strengths and weaknesses in the 14 characters and different strategies to exploit in the 14 levels and 10 worlds that you can fight in. The oddest this about Unholy War is how drastically your tactics change (HAVE to change, I might add) playing VS another player, versus playing against the computer. The computer AI's biggest strength is it's ability to 'out-reflex' you (Mogalin is a perfect example), but it's biggest weakness is it's inability to 'out-think' you (Angel is a perfect example, because the computer Angel is SO easy to beat with most anyone, but is arguably the most powerful character in the game, next to Quicksilver that is). When you play against another player who can play in the same league as you, it's almost like playing an entirely different game. This is one of those rare games that BEGS for an emulator version capable of 'internet VS' play to be made. I'd take any of ya'll on... mhua ha ha... Oh yes, there ARE two secret levels to unlock, the Menhir Circle and Dark Maze. Menhir Circle is nothing special, but Dark Maze holds the distinct honor of being the most 'fair' level because ALL FOUR different powerups appear in this level. There are also two secret characters to unlock in the game, Beta Razorfane and MegaPrana. I don't mind spoiling the 'surprise' because these two characters can only be used in Mayhem mode, and they are EXTREMELY more powerful than anyone else. In fact, my roommate and I refuse to play Mayhem mode with these characters because they are so overpowered. If they would only release Unholy War2 on the PS2 with a Beta version of EVERYONE... Give it a try, you WILL NOT be dissapointed.

It's fundamentally a battle game that's 1 on 1 with characters having distinct advantages over eachother that can make some nearly invincible to others, however the many arenas an virtually nerf or even reverse these advantages. Each player has 6 other different characters that they can use to replace a character that is defeated, winner is the first one to eliminate all 7 of opponents roster. Or there is strategy mode that is like a chess game where a square on the board produces units who can either be moved to resource squares to generate income, or moved to attack enemy units, winner is first to occupy the enemy production square and then wipe out enemy remaining forces. It's graphics are way ahead of its time and actually look really good for the era, the gameplay is super smooth and has plenty of room to play as a novice as well as an expert while still being fun. However a novice likely couldn't touch me unless they had the right character on the right environment to the greatest advantage. It's in person 2 players pvp or 1 players vs game

Childhood Favorite!
The Unholy War was one of my favorite games as a kid. I'm glad I'm able to play it again. I totaly recomend this game. An epic classic and a blast from the past. These older games are sceariously the best. And for some reason I just have that slight sadisfaction that they have a black back for the disk. Came in perfect condition. (Please get this game! It's simple, but fun)
