Despite its girls-with-guns storyline and doe-eyed characters dressed in schoolgirl outfits, the action anime series GUNSLINGER GIRL eschews its genre's typically breezy comedy style for a dark and brooding exploration of female childhood. Set in Italy, the series centers on a little girl named Henrietta, who is taken in by a seemingly benevolent social welfare agency after her entire family is murdered in a massacre. But the organization is really a front for a secret government program that adopts terminally ill or orphaned girls, erases their memories, and endows them with implanted cybernetic devices that transform them into perfectly conscience-free assassins. As part of the reconditioning process, the girls are partnered with older male agents who not only provide them with professional instruction but act as their surrogate older brothers. Moody, stylish, and violent, the series chronicles Henrietta's training with her partner Jose with equal parts high-octane action sequences and poignant character studies of the pair's evolving relationship. The anime series is presented in its entirety with this collection of episodes.

Bazaar warped premise yields touching moments: Gunslinger Girl
Gunslinger Girl is designed around an awful idea: A government agency appropriates near-death children and rebuilds them into assassin-cyborgs… yielding brainwashed gun-wielding children who live and laugh like 12-year-old kids but who cold-bloodedly murder their government-assigned targets without a care. So… once you are over that hump, and are willing to “go with it”, the series offers a touching look at the children and their handlers as they deal with this monstrous situation. The kids are just kids… living in a dormitory-like setting and looking for the admiration of their handlers. The handlers are like FBI agents who leave the facility every night and go home to their regular lives. We get an intimate look into everyone’s lives… we get to see the tight relationships that develop… ... If you enjoy the sound of brass bouncing off the pavement and the graphic violence as gun-wielding little girls take out the terrorists, this series is for you!

Strange premise
The concept is a little strange. After all cybernetic brainwashed school girls being turned into ruthless assassins? Other than the basic idea the storyline is carried off in high style. Top quality animation and sound. The dubbing (in English) was also top quality. You CAN believe in these characters. The storyline is pretty well written. The only thing keeping the story from getting Five stars is the way the first two episodes are written. You start off in the cation very quickly, and as you wonder just what is going on you get flashbacks giving you some background. All in all it is carried off in high fashion. Just my own personal bias against extensive flashbacks. After the two part introductory episode(s) the storyline improves a great deal. For action series and character ... A non-japanese version that don't disappoint
As a anime lover that don't speak japanese, it's always been hard to find official releases that are: A. Really official (no further explanation needed) A. Subtitled (so we can understand what's going on) B. Not too pricey (I don't know you guys, but I think that paying US$ 120.00 for a single OVA, as most japanese releases cost, is a bit too much) C. And most important of all, non-japanese versions that maintain the original art, not changing openings and/or endings, showing kanji written titles where they're supposed to be because even though some may not understand, they are part of the whole concept and therefore should be preserved. Funimation's release "gunslinger girl" puts together the best of both USA and Japan worlds, if you're looking for Japanese anime that has english ... Funimation's release "gunslinger girl" puts together the best of both USA and Japan worlds, if you're looking for Japanese anime that has english subtitles and original video sequences (without any kind of "occidentalization") you won't be dissapointed, The "gunslinger girl" series has multi angle viewing so you can enjoy both american and japanese opening and ending sequences, unlike some ADV releases that replaces japanese title screens with the title in english, e.g. the first "Trust and Betrayal" OVA release from "Rurouni Kenshin" also known as "Samurai X" where a beautiful sumi e painting title screen was replaced with a lame black screen with white letters, clearly a violation to this awesome series ... Some of you may think I'm overreacting, but I'm sure a lot of anime fans out there understands and agree with me . Anyway I don't own any more of Funimation's releases, but if they're all compiled like "Gunslinger girl" is, I will surely buy some more from them . The "Excellent" rating I gave to this title goes mostly for the U.S. Studio that released it as they made it exactly like the original, the story is great, but not decisive for the final rating and may not please all viewers as I describe below. Speaking about the series itself, the story is rather disturbing, a government agency that takes small girls about to die and makes murderers out of them by turning the girls into little cyborgs thus prolonging their exploitation may not please the viewers always used to "happy endings", but as the series goes we realize that even in this wicked environment the protagonists may find some redemption showing that they care for each other ... if you watch it with an open mind I'm sure you'll find the series at least interesting.
