    This is classic Ella

    The mercer standards are given the Ella treatment and the arrangements are so memorable. Every track is a classic.

    Ella Fitzgerlald Johnny Mercer Songbook

    (ALSO SEE "E. FITZGERLD :JEROME KERN SONGBOOK) This album is part of the great recording legacy of Fitzgerald's career. Recorded in the 50s when she was at her peak. All these "songbook" albums are a must to have. This one like the Jerome Kern this one is also accompanied by Nelson Riddle and his orchestra. So again we have lush, sophisticated, if a tad overblown, accompaniments. Johnny Mercer is a smooth and sophisticated song writer though unlike Cole Porter (who wrote his music as well his lyrics), only 3 of these are with Mercer's music others are by Hoagy Carmichael H Arlen and many others. This particular album has less of those "marvellous" songs that one HAS to hear Ella interpret, and fills itself out with quite a lot of padding. But it does have " Laura" (one of Julie ...
