The programme was nominated for many Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and was consistently in Nielsen's top 10 for its entire run, garnering both critical acclaim and public popularity. It also proved daring for its time: not only did it tackle sensitive political issues, but it was a prime-time show whose main characters were much older than television's desired demographic. This box set contains every episode from seasons 1-4.

The writing, by the bawdy, brilliant Susan Harris, who was lured back to television by the promise of doing a show with the kind of characters seldom seen on the tube, is on a par with her wittiest days as the creator of "Soap".
