Reviews
In this book, Leak astutely examines and reveals various dimensions of Sartre's persona. . . . This book will be of interest not only to all Sartre scholars but also to anyone who has an interest in modern philosophy, politics, psychology, and literature., At once a crisp and eminently readable introduction to Sartre's thought and works and an exploration of Sartre's most sustained act of "engagement", that of writing, this is a valuable slim addition to the "two-and-a-half metres" of Sartre studies that Leak describes having on his bookshelf., "In this book, Leak astutely examines and reveals various dimensions of Sartre's persona. . . . This book will be of interest not only to all Sartre scholars but also to anyone who has an interest in modern philosophy, politics, psychology, and literature."-- Metapsychology Online    , "In this book, Leak astutely examines and reveals various dimensions of Sartre's persona. . . . This book will be of interest not only to all Sartre scholars but also to anyone who has an interest in modern philosophy, politics, psychology, and literature."--Metapsychology Online  , Writing a short biographical introduction to Sartre is no easy feat, and it would be difficult to top this author's effort . . . Andrew Leak's virtue is to have succinctly encapsulated Sartre's personality and core convictions from the midst of the heap left by the Sartrean writing machine. He is sensitive to the intellect in his context, how he responded in his writing, and how scholars have commented subsequently. As such, this is a wonderful addition to the compelling series "Critical Lives.", "In this book, Leak astutely examines and reveals various dimensions of Sartre''s persona. . . . This book will be of interest not only to all Sartre scholars but also to anyone who has an interest in modern philosophy, politics, psychology, and literature."-- Metapsychology Online

Synopsis
Jean-Paul Sartre was arguably the most celebrated and written-about intellectual of the twentieth century. He was also one of the most divisive: twenty-five years after his death, his name still provokes revulsion and admiration in equal measure. But who really knew him? From early on, Sartre cultivated publicity and transparency as paradoxical shields of his privacy. Through an impressive range of biographical writings, interviews and films, and through the chronicling skills of his life-long companion Simone de Beauvoir, he effectively wrote his life as he was living it., "What I have just written is false. True. Neither true nor false, like everything one writes about madmen, about men." With these sentences, Jean-Paul Sartre undermines the truthfulness of his own autobiography, Les Mots . Undeterred by such circumlocutions, Andrew Leak here cuts through Sartre's own disavowals to unearth the man behind the literary and philosophical giant. This biographical study integrates Sartre's works into his personal life, revealing the intimate contexts in which his philosophy developed. From Sartre's beginnings as a bright and precocious student, Leak explores how he struggled against the repressive strictures of bourgeois expectations, endured cruelty at the hands of schoolmates, and forged his conflicted personality within a fragmented family life. The book probes his particularly influential relationships with a range of people--from Simone de Beauvoir to Gaston Gallimard--and how Sartre was transformed by historical events, in particular his service in World War II. Telling anecdotes, personal correspondence, and archival photographs expose how Sartre's own challenges emerged as predominant themes in his works--such as the often blurred delineation between the real and imaginary, and his preoccupation with definitions of "madness" in the individual. Leak's astute and provocative examination of Sartre himself challenges the philosopher's assertion about the limits of knowledge of the other.
