Movin' On Up!
My living room and media library just happen to be on the East Side of my home; very fitting as a new owner of this collection. Every time I hear Ja'net DuBois (of "Good Times" fame) sing The Jeffersons theme song, I remember the hopes and dreams inspired by her words when I was barely a teenager watching this series. A lot of fish have been fried, a lot of beans have burned on the grill, and it took a whole lot of climbing just to get up my hills. But I made it; and more than 40 years later, I still cannot believe that Norman Lear got away with the clichés and stereotypical innuendo that characterized all of his early 70's shows.
Aside from all of that, The Jeffersons is classic entertainment that proves America was ready to embrace the African-American experience four decades ago. Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford, the ever-loveable Marla Gibbs and a bevy of amazing talent around them made a country upset by an overseas war and a great deal of political upheaval here at home rest easy, knowing that black-and-white television had found a new meaning via color television.
