The life of Georgetown University coaching legend, Black activist, and educator John Thompson - on and off the basketball court-throws America's unresolved struggle with racial justice into sharp relief. He completed this autobiography shortly before his death in the summer of 2020. I Came As a Shadow drives us from Thompson's childhood under Jim Crow segregation, through his years building up the Georgetown program from scratch, to our current moment of racial reckoning. Finally setting the record straight on the stereotypes that created "Hoya Paranoia," Thompson takes us to the bench as he coaches NBA Hall of Famers such as Allen Iverson and Patrick Ewing, beyond the court as he confronts a D.C. drug kingpin in his players' orbit, and behind the scenes of his years on the Nike board, demonstrating at each turn how to uplift the next generation. Thompson's mother was a teacher who couldn't teach because she was Black. His father could not read or write, so the only way he could identify different cements at the factory where he worked was to taste them. Their son grew up to be a man with his own life-sized statue in a building that bears his family's name on a campus once kept afloat by the selling of 272 enslaved people. This is a great American story, and John Thompson's experience sheds light on many of the issues roiling our nation. In these pages, he proves himself to be the elder statesman college basketball and the country need to hear from now.
