Reviews
Del Wilber is the real deal. He's been there, done that, and has the t-shirt to prove it. In the Shadow of the Swords brings light to a little-known aspect of our War on Terror; training foreign nationals to stand up on their own. This memoir provides an inside look at our nation's efforts to train Iraqi police officers. A great storyteller, Del explores the challenges, fears, and humor of working in one of America's most recent war zones. It's a read you won't soon forget., In The Shadow Of the Swords: The Baghdad Police Academy is a snarky and smart blade that's plunged to the hilt in serious reality. The author and I served in Baghdad at the same time, I thought I knew a lot, but I've done nothing but learn from this book. Solid writing. Entertaining. Awesome storytelling with amazing first-hand accounts about a whole new angle on the war in Iraq. Loaded with modest heroes that made a difference., Del is an outstanding storyteller who brings all of his experiences as a soldier and Agency operative to bear in his smart and often humorous writing., Look up 'genuine article' in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of Del Wilber. As an avid reader of non-fiction and true-life experiences, I expect credibility. Del Wilber has lived it and has now written this unbelievably true and can't-believe-it-happened account. Highly recommended.

Synopsis
A entertaining insight into how retired American Police Officers helped rebuild the Iraqi National Police., This vivid account gives an insight into the experience of living and working in Baghdad after the fall of Saddam. Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the subsequent fall of the regime of Saddam Hussein, the U.S. government embarked upon a reconstruction effort which included rebuilding an Iraqi National Police. Retired and former American Police Officers were contracted to travel to Iraq to train this new police force. Dependent on their experience and ingenuity to make life bearable under very austere conditions, and relying on the 'gallows sense of humor' they had acquired during their time in law enforcement back in the States, the instructors persevered in their task, often under trying and difficult circumstances, as well as hostile fire from insurgents determined to prevent the Iraqi police from regaining control of the streets of Baghdad.Life at the Police Academy varied from sheer boredom to moments of terror as mortars and rockets rained in. Leaving the academy to travel through the streets of Baghdad to the Green Zone for meetings could easily result in being ambushed. D. W. Wilber recounts his experiences as part of this effort, and the unique personalities who came to Baghdad to serve as instructors to the Iraqi Police Cadets attending the Baghdad Police Academy.

- k***o (17)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI ordered three items from this seller, and one was damaged in transit (the seller is not at fault for this). However the seller very quickly righted everything, communicating with me the entire time. The other two items were in perfect condition, arrived on time, and were exactly as described. They were very quick to fix what was wrong, and were very polite about the entire thing. I will be buying from them again in the future.
- f***f (470)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseReasonable price for a hardcover children's book, printed on quality, thick, glossy paper. No photo of item on listing, which was a bit lazy (even if it is a low-cost one). Packaging fine, mailed the following day, and postal costs included tracking. Arrived in good time, and with only minor cosmetic damage to the cover. Greatly appreciate it when sellers take the time to treat a low-cost order with care.Minions: Long Live King Bob - 1910114235, Lucy Rosen, hardcover, new (#286407220301)
