Synopsis
Calculus of variations has a long history. Its fundamentals were laid down by icons of mathematics like Euler and Lagrange. It was once heralded as the panacea for all engineering optimization problems by suggesting that all one needed to do was to state a variational problem, apply the appropriate Euler-Lagrange equation and solve the resulting differential equation. This, as most all encompassing solutions, turned out to be not always true and the resulting differential equations are not necessarily easy to solve. On the other hand, many of the differential equations commonly used in various fields of engineering are derived from a variational problem. Hence it is an extremely important topic justifying the new edition of this book. This third edition extends the focus of the book to academia and supports both variational calculus and mathematical modeling classes. The newly added sections, extended explanations, numerous examples and exercises aid the students in learning, the professors in teaching, and the engineers in applying variational concepts., This third edition extends the focus of the book to academia to also support variational calculus and mathematical modeling classes. The newly added sections, extended explanations, numerous examples and exercises aid the students in learning, the professors in teaching, and the engineers in applying variational concepts., The subject of calculus of variations is to find optimal solutions to application problems whose optimum may be a certain quantity, shape or function. It is a very important technique of mathematical modeling in a variety of disciplines. This book is a self-contained coverage of the topic and addresses both the academic and industrial audiences. Dr. Komzsik presents a unique, explanatory and application-oriented text that sets it apart from the theoretical treatises of most texts in this subject. Difficult discussions about function spaces and rigorous proofs were avoided to make the topic accessible with an undergraduate mathematics foundation. This third edition extends the focus of the book to academia to also support variational calculus and mathematical modeling classes. The newly added sections, extended explanations, numerous examples and exercises aid the students in learning, the professors in teaching, and the engineers in applying variational concepts. Prof. Zoltan Papp Department of Physics California State University, Long Beach About the book: This book is organized into two parts: calculus of variations foundation and mathematical modeling of various physical and engineering phenomena. The first part covers functionals ranging from single variable, single function to multivariable, multiple function cases including constraints, the inverse problem, analytic and numerical solutions. The second part presents variational discussion of models for geometry, motion, elastic vibrations, heat conduction and fluid mechanics using Hamilton's principle, Lagrange's equations of motion and the finite element technique. - c***a (121)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThe seller was very responsive and answered me on a timely matter. The product itself came in its packaging and was new, not used at all. The packaging was not beat up or anything, safely delivered to my mailbox. No mix ups and zero stress with delivery. The price for the product is completely understandable for the product. I really appreciate the seller and I am very happy to have purchased through this seller. Completely trustable!
- m***4 (1603)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseLeaving positive feedback because 1) item was packed well & arrived as described 2) seller did give partial refund when subsequent price dropped below org purchase price. 3) communication was quick However, there was a downside to this transaction -item listed as in-stock but ended up waiting nearly a month for them to get it from their distributer then ship it to me (bought June 29th, arrived around July 21). Auction said 12-15 days. Better clarity would have prevented lot of frustration
- w***i (875)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAbsolutely Wonderful Seller!! Terrific Item As Described!!! Great Service and Communication!! Shipped In Waterproof Packaging!! I Received Item In About One Week!! Very Pleased With Seller! I Will Buy From This Seller Again!!
