Theory A. no matter what the brand it will all come from the same factory in China. Theory B. there are any number of factories in China all slavishly copying the same pattern, at least in form and less certainly the substance. There is no telling, even buying the same brand from the same source, what the quality will be like next time. Thus writing a review may not help anyone much. The example I have here is branded 'amtech' and was delivered swiftly enough from a UK source. The wooden parts are —I dunno— bamboo? The brass parts finished well enough and neatly inlaid. All fits together firm and square. Coated in a rather thick uneven layer of some sort of varnish; vaguely evil smelling stuff, reminiscent of horse piss, a bit of workshop use will probably improve it. Is what I have here indistinguishable from the same I see in the Axminster catalogue? Or is it perhaps 'seconds' quality. A few minutes work with some 0000 wire wool and wax polish has much improved the finish, it functions well enough, and having paid but a third of the price I am pleased enough with what I have. This marking gauge is sold as a premium product, but it has some quality issues. The brass slider sticks in its groove, the two mortice marking points are not the same size or sharpness, and the brass insert that holds the stationary marking point is not very accurately positioned. The block is not quite at a right angle with the arm. The gauge is covered in a thick coating of plastic which is not very pleasant to the touch. An hour or so of work was necessary to bring this gauge up to scratch. So, not a terrible product, but I wouldn't recommend it or buy it again.
