This is a hard review to make. Why? Because the Canon T80 is one of the most controversial SLR models ever made. Introduced in the mid 1980's, the T80 was not popular with serious amateur photographers due to the lack of direct controls over the operation of the cameras. The first fully incorporated autofocus camera, the T80 had little in the way of manual overrides with control being done in Program mode using pictograms. If you wanted good depth of field you selected a certain pictogram, if you wanted a fast shutter speed another pictogram, but the trouble was there is no indication of shutter speed on the camera so you can never really know what the camera is doing. Using the AF lenses again there is no way of knowing the aperture selected by the camera. The idea was to make an idiot ... This is a hard review to make. Why? The idea was to make an idiot proof camera that would give users SLR results with the ease of a compact camera and if you use the T80 like that then fair enough. However, if you want to be certain of results then a more experienced photographer will get better photos. The reason being, using some knowledge of what the camera is doing under certain conditions allows you to make further guesses in order to get the T80 to do what you want it to do. One sort of override you can make is using the ISO film speed setting to make the camera over or under expose if you suspect subject failure, for example shooting in snow where underexposure may occur. Using a traditional FD lens you can adjust the aperture on the lens but the camera will automatically select 1/60th sec, which is ok when using flash but in daylight it is likely to be restrictive because the shutter speed will then dictate your chosen aperture. There is an excellent site about the T80 online you can visit which covers all bases. I don't recommend this camera for most users but only for collectors and those seeking a bit of a challenge in trying to get best results from the camera. The T80 really is an enigma and there are only 3 AF lenses available, the 35-70, 50mm and 75-200. The AF system is agricultural by today's standards and frequently I found I had to use manual focus. I got mine for £16 with two lenses and I'm having fun experimenting with it. As an experienced photographer I can get a bit more out of the camera and if you're a student stay well clear because this camera has little in the way of manual control.
