I had a chance to compare it to Canon's 17-40/4L lens. 17-40 features a better control of flare and a better built lens body, offering faster USM drive. That's basically, it. In all other respects I found Tamron 17-35 better. It is very sharp wide open, color rendition is very accurate (unlike other modern Tamron lenses). It doesn't suffer from heavy vignetting on full-frame sensor cameras as 17-40L. Tamron is the whole 1 EV faster on 17mm. 17-40L costs twice as much. There's something to think about, right? :)
I was looking for a wide angle lens that I could use for outdoors and some portrait photography. Of course Canon L glass would be nice, but sometimes budgets get in the way. I like the fact that it is fast at 2.8, so I can use in less than optimum lighting situations. The zoom seems to be smooth with no creep. I also use a Tamron 28 - 300mm and love the lens. I have shot several thousand images and anticipate using the new lens the same way. The lens is a bit soft zoomed to 35mm, but nothing that I am concerned about. Great lens, very reliable.
Good lens for the money.....it has soft corners on a full frame camera (wide open), but excellent corner-to-corner on APS-C.
