About this product

Product Information

Readers join desperate pilots in the cockpit as they fight gravity and time in a plane that's falling out of the sky. Anyone who watches the news knows about the "black box." Officially called the cockpit voice recorder, the black box (which is actually Day-glo orange) records the final moments of any in-flight accident. Often it provides the only explanation of a crash -- inevitably, it provides a heart-breaking, second-by-second account of intense fear tempered by unyielding professionalism. This 1984 Quill title has been completely updated to include twenty-eight new incidents occurring between 1978 and 1996. Some are famous, like the 1996 Valujet crash in the Everglades and the ill-fated launch of the space shuttle Challenger; other disasters range from commuter prop aircraft to jumbo airliners and a pair of Air Force planes. Few have ever been revealed in their entirety, each, without exception, is absolutely gripping. In this new edition, editor Malcolm MacPherson has, wherever possible, added weather notes and descriptions of events in the cockpit and cabin, heightening our vivid sense of being there during the final moments. Provided by the National Transportation Safety Board and vetted by an experienced airline captain, these are unforgettable case studies in ultimate emergency -- authentic, immediate, filled with drama, terror, human frailty and error, and unquenchable courage.

Super impressed with this seller! They had the best price by far for this book! Both the cost of the book and the shipping fee was far better than average! The book came exactly as described, it was well packaged and quite a bit earlier than expected! The seller was polite and replied quickly to my messages. I’ll definitely make another purchase soon! Thank you to the seller! Be safe and keep up the great work!

WONDERFUL book! Better than described, in just like new condition [not just good]. Packaged very carefully, shipped very securely. Great seller, would buy from again in a heartbeat! No communication occurred, but I imagine it would have been as good as the rest of their customer service. Very happy with purchase, thank you very much!

  • Sobering review of cockpit voice recorder comments.

Thoughtful telling of airline crashes and near-misses, using the Cockpit Voice Recorder information. Very interesting collection. Those wanting more information on a specific crash or near miss can go to Wikipedia or similar source to gather more follow up information if they wish. This author later published another book, which focused more on survivors' comments from interviews after the crash, which also is worth reading, especially if you fly.

  • Aviation Accidents

I purchased this book about two weeks ago, As a former pilot I like to learn for other pilot's mistakes. Also I am a avid reader of books on a large range of subjects. I thought the book was well written and was very good at explaining the accidents and there aftermaths. Also explains airline and government responses to the accidents that were investigated. All in all I thought it was a very good book.
