    Best WWII Movie Ever

Cross of Iron is the best WWII movie ever made. It presents the German soldiers view after the defeats of Leningrad and Stalingrad as the German army is in retreat from Russia. James Colburn's portrait of Sargent Steiner is epic as he deals with a Aristocratic Captain seeking glory for his own personal gains. The movie is rated R for graphic violence and some nudity.

  • Cross of Iron

Director Sam Peckinpah's movie tend to be on the bloody/action side (i.e-The Wild Bunch, etc), and this WWII movie is in that mode. It takes an unflinching look at the war and stars James Coburn as Corporal Steiner, the leader of a German platoon in 1943. A contest of wills develops between the courageous Steiner and his new commander, Captain Stansky (Maximilian Schell) who plays the part of a Prussian aristocrat, who believes his leadership is his bloodright. Stransky has his sights set on earning the Iron Cross, Germany's highest onor for valor, but he is a complete coward at heart which soon leads him to take desperate measures. A GREAT movie for WWII buffs and history students, and Peckinpah takes great tasks in providing plenty of fighting and killing of both ...

  • An underrated Peckinpah film

An unusual film in that it portrays Operation Barbarossa from the Nazi/German perspective. Visceral, engaging film with great performances by Schell and Coburn. The battle scenes are harrowing.

  • The German Side of WWII

Sam Peckinpah did a great job in showing how disgusted the every day German foot soldier felt toward their officers, and their forced retreat from Russia. Very good character development, and as always for this director, very believable action sequences. I highly recommend this film to any WW II Fan.

  • Phenominal- One of Coburns best roles and Pekinpah's finast

One of James Coburns finest roles, in my opion, and Peckinpah's only war movie- a true classic and must own for any Peckinpah fan- rank as high as Straw Dogs; Wild Bunch- just a great movie w excellent acting throughout
