The lens is quite small and very sharp. It has 2 filter threads the larger of which (49mm) is less than the diameter of the lens. The smaller filter thread (40.5mm) is set in a plastic cover which bayonets on the front of the lens leaving room for a 49mm UV/Lens protector inside/underneath the cover. There is a centre pinch 40.5mm lens cap fitted in the cover which when removed leaves a lens hood shaped hole in the middle. The main advantage is that the lens hood can be left in place and it doesn't take up much space. If you want to use extra filters however you'd have to decide whether to use the 49mm thread and dispense with the lens hood or use the 40.5mm thread with your filters in front of the lens hood. They could have made both filter threads 49mm which would have been more flexible if slightly less elegant.Read full review

Experienced photographers have long suggested that the so called 'nifty fifty' should be the chosen focal length for a general walk-around lens. The 35mm focal length is nearer to the diagonal measurement of the full frame sensor of Sony's A7 range of cameras so is thus more appropriate if the eye's own perspective or field if view is what you're after. This Zeiss Sonnar version is a cracking example of what a good quality general purpose lens should be. It is small, lightweight and offers superb image quality and colour rendition. A true bargain if you can find a low cost used one as I did....!

Small, light, sharp and unobtrusive this is a really great everyday walk-around lens. Only downfall is widest aperture only f2.8

I love this lens but still after 3 years it's the only decent small AF lens for the A7. That keeps it desirable but we could do with a couple more lenses like this. For what it is it's a bit expensive and the lens hood is a bit annoying. Filters that don't fit underneath it mean you have no lens cap, which is not ideal. The 40.5mm cap is also too easily lost. If the hood/cap situation was resolved, it came with a case (like the 55mm Zeiss) and it was £400 rrp then it would be a 5 star product.
