About this product

Product Information

Developed by Koei, Saiyuki: Journey West is a title that weaves the tale of a fantastic quest featuring tactical medieval combat between people and creatures with a host of bizarre powers. Saiyuki: Journey West is based on one of the most famous Chinese folk tales; the journey of the monk Sanzo to India and back from his native land. Sanzo has the power to call forth powerful guardians to aid him in times of need, and as his quest progresses, so will the strength of his summoning. Along the way he encounters a whole host of characters and situations, and most of the allies he meets will have the peculiar power to mutate into monstrous were-creatures that possess enhanced powers.

Players will journey as Sanzo, taking on an expanding cast of characters to help win the day. The path through the game is very linear, comparable to Final Fantasy Tactics, and focuses on squad combat. All of the player-controlled characters aside from Sanzo have alternate were-forms they can slip in and out of at any given point in the fight. Yet finding the right time to alter one's form is the key to the battle, since transitions can take quite a bit out of the individual and can only occur once during a single combat.

Although Saiyuki: Journey West does rely on skill management in relation to the were-forms and Sanzo's guardian magic, the complexities of similar tactical combat games have been put aside. But the key to this game is the fighting. Most time on the battlefield is spent attempting to correctly place troops in order to get a jump on your enemies. Each character is attuned to a certain element, as are the enemies. A good deal of the game's strategy comes in finding which element is more powerful against which, and then exploiting the strengths and weaknesses of the opponents' elemental stature.

  • Saiyuki: Journey Westward the Video Game

I love this game, true the graphics are a bit like early Nintendo, with chibi characters but the storyline is a good one and I must admit it does follow the line of the myth/story as it comes from China. I love the way you level through fighting and figuring out the use of elemental attacks against varying elemental enemies both human and mystical. The only dislike I have about this game is that it hasn't been updated to a more exact pixel/graphic imagery.

  • Saiyuki: Journey West

This game was a pleasant surprise. Despite the obscure title this rare game turns out to be a solid, tactical RPG in vein of Final Fantasy Tactics,Ogre Battle and the like. It involves characters that "were-change" into fierce and powerful monsters, environments that can be manipulated to cut of the enemy's path and gyms to level-up even more. Check it out!

  • Saiyuki Journey West

I like to play strategy type games such as this and final fantasy tactics and ogre battle. This is a rare title and i am glad i was able to get it so cheap. Alot of good games you just cant find anymore and some are just way to expensive.

  • Anime Tactics

I love this game. I like any game of this type, tactical I mean, and this one has a unique story that will keep you going. It has side quests and Jobs so you can way over level if you want. Even Has some secret characters. overall I say that this is right up there with Brigintine/Vandal Harts two of my favorate hard to find games.
