The Kennel Murder Case
Before William Powell played Nick Charles in the famous "Thin Man" movies, he played Philo Vance in four movies in the early 1930's.(Green Murder Case, Benson Murder Case, and Canary Murder Case.) Powell has the debonair presence and sophistication of the later character, but does not have Myrna Loy. Mary Astor plays his screen opposite. Mary Astor was a fine actress and she played in many fine films. She certainly had a distinguished acting career. But there is no way she and Powell convey the chemistry that he did with Myrna Loy. That said, this is a fine mystery. If we could do it, which we can not of course, but if we could isolate Powell's individual performances without the interaction of his leading ladies, one could argue that his performance in the Kennel ... Obviously then, this is a good movie. Philo Vance goes through the scenes picking up clues that the police department overlooks and of course, solves the murders. The movie was produced in 1933 and seems a bit dated. The audio is not crisp, especially in crowd scenes. The clothes the actors wear remind us how the well-to-do dressed in this time period; not very casual, or comfortable, at all. If you can get by some of these minor details, this is a very enjoyable who-done-it.

Cheap Price. Poor quality
Once again you get what you paid for. Story good to watch but poor quality of DVD makes it difficult to truly enjoy. I find that cheap DVD's by Alpha all have the same problem. Not very clear visual or audio. Like I said you get what you pay for.
