'75 The Who's Classic Rock Opera Starring Roger Daltrey
I was 19 years of age when the rock opera "Tommy" was released in theaters. Roger Daltrey, the lead singer of the legendary rock band, "The Who," played the title role. The musical score of the rock opera is composed by "The Who." This film version is based upon Pete Townshend's stage opera. The all-star cast includes Ann-Margret (as Tommy's mother), Eric Clapton, Elton John (playing a very campy rendition of "The Pinball Wizard"), Keith Moon, Jack Nicholson, Robert Powell, Oliver Reed, The Who & a sizzling hot Tina Turner (as the seductive Gypsy Queen). Tommy (Roger Daltrey) witnesses his dad being murdered. As result of that traumatic experience, he's left deaf, unable to speak & blind. Because he's suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, exposure to abusive family members make ... I was 19 years of age when the rock opera "Tommy" was released in theaters. His out of body experience is befitting for the early 1970's: it's psychedelic. Tommy's got an outstanding performance ability with pinball machines. Enter Elton John doing a fabulous rendition of "The Pinball Wizard." His family wants to find that cure that will snap Tommy out of his traumatized daze. So his mother (Ann-Margaret) takes him to the Gypsy Queen (Tina Turner) who injects him with a mind altering drug & seduces him. From this film reviewer's perspective, having seen the film in theaters when first released, as well as now, on this VHS, it's very difficult to say now who, if anyone, really stands out as delivering an exceptional performance. I recall when I first viewed it in theaters thinking that Tina Turner's & Elton John's cameo appearances for one scene a piece somehow made the rock opera work for me. But hinsight provides a different perspective. Ann-Margaret & Oliver Reed's performances really do stand out as exceptionally well done now. Obviously, this film is a classic in the history of rock music. "Tommy" was invented before music videos were being made, let alone passe as they are today. Although they are very different, there's realy only one other "rock opera" of the same era that also is a classic & historical: Pink Floyd's "The Wall." The two can't be fairly compared because of how technologically different they are. Pink Floyd's "The Wall" is all Pink Floyd and biographical, even though it combines graphic or cartoonish footage blinded into human performance footage. "Tommy" really is a 'rock opera' complete with a cast of musician performers who are cast as characters in a cohesive story. I suppose the only other possible 'rock opera' that I can think of that is remotely similar is "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Neither "Hair" nor "Godspell" consist of musical scores that I would call rock. Thus, "Tommy" seems to have blazed the trail that led to all of these other variations~
