The Show Must Go On.
I used to be a big fan of Queen. But the whole 'Queen+ Paul Rodgers' idea never sat comfortably with me so when this CD emerged in 2005 I wasn't at all interested. I saw it more as 'Queen- Freddie'. I wondered why they never went out as 'Roger & Brian' or 'May & Taylor' which more fans would've been ready to accept at the time. Or they could've brought back Tim Staffell,the singer in Smile, Roger & Brian's pre- Queen band. He's still a good friend of the band and sounds quite a lot like Paul Rodgers. It would've been fantastic to have heard 'Earth' or April Lady' dusted down & given a fresh airing. Drafting in Paul Rodgers just seemed like a mistake.. he's certainly no Freddie... he would be OK standing in for Kelly Jones or Liam Gallagher I guess- but Queen were more than just a ... The first few tracks in and my worst ears were confirmed, this was heartless, souless 'Tonight Matthew I want to be Freddie from Queen' karaoke stuff. But then... Roger & Brian take over the spotlight for the middle section- and it's glorious! Roger is a fantastic singer & it's great to hear him on 'Say it's not true', 'these are the days of our lives', 'radio gaga' & 'I'm in love with my car'. Brian sings '39'& 'love of my life',an unusually delicate take on 'Hammer To Fall' & treats us to his instrumental 'last horizon'. By the time Paul Rodgers comes back on, all is forgiven. It is, as he would put it 'All Right Now' and it is impossible by this stage not to get swept along in the medley of hits and emerge with a great beaming smile on your face. 'I Want it All' which Freddie unfortunately never got to sing live onstage, is a particular highlight. So, all in all, there are plenty of treats & surprises and it's well worth a listen or two. Even the most cynical of Queen fans (like me) will find plenty to enjoy here. Phew!

Brian May is superb
Paul Rogers will never replace freddie but this is a respectable performance. However to be brutally honest I only purchased this for the Brian guitar solo which was worth it for the price.

a great fusion
after a little hesitancey about the whole idea of paul rodgers being the singer (or anyone that wasn't fredie for that matter) i thought i'd give the guy the benefit of the doubt and boy i'm glad i did. the first song, reaching out, is only short but gets you used to the voice without it actually being a queen song as we would know it then comes a very strong start from paul with tie your mother down, the one thing that stands out most for me is just how strong this guys voice is, i can see why brian and roger picked him. though many people would try to do a freddie kareoke in this position paul rodgers has done quite the opposite and brought his own style to the songs (he probably watched a dvd of the tribute concert and thought he didn't want to embarras himself to the same degree as ... after a little hesitancey about the whole idea of paul rodgers being the singer (or anyone that wasn't fredie for that matter) i thought i'd give the guy the benefit of the doubt and boy i'm glad i did. the first song, reaching out, is only short but gets you used to the voice without it actually being a queen song as we would know it then comes a very strong start from paul with tie your mother down, the one thing that stands out most for me is just how strong this guys voice is, i can see why brian and roger picked him. though many people would try to do a freddie kareoke in this position paul rodgers has done quite the opposite and brought his own style to the songs (he probably watched a dvd of the tribute concert and thought he didn't want to embarras himself to the same degree as some on there did) however, i did have to listen to BoRhap twice because it sounded that close (and having seen them live since i origionally wrote this i know why, it's a video of a freddie live version that is played on the big screen D'oh). another good thing is that brian and roger have realised there was life before queen for paul and there are 4 songs from Free in the set (only fair, the guy did write them). one thing with freddie not being here anymore is it gives the others a chance to perform thier own songs, with '39 and i'm in love with my car, both from "a night at the opera" and writen and performed by brian and roger respectively being welcome additions for any hardcore queen fan. the last song on disc 1 is called "last horizon" and it is a tune that everyone should here once before they die, it's a stunning tune and needs to be heard. my overall opinion of the album and indeed the whole new set up is that it could easily have gone wrong in so many ways but far from it, it works and it works well, mainly because in paul rodgers you have a star in his own right with a very powerfull voice of his own that isn't interested in trying to be freddie because he's not that stupid to think he could be, and what you end up with is a very good fusion between queen and free that works VERY well indeed
