Story of the 1958 scandal involving the TV Quiz show "21". The reigning champion was Herbert Stempel (John Torturro), a loud mouthed individual with a totally obnoxious personality. He is also a genius, and nobody seems to be able to beat him. The viewing audience can't stand this guy, so the producers of the show encourage him to lose and allow a handsome college professor named Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes) to win and become the new champion. Stempel agrees, but only if they keep him on television. Van Doren is popular with the audiences and is earning good money, but when the show's producers begin feeding him the questions and answers in advance of the show, his conscience and ethics begin to bother him. As weeks pass and Van Doren becomes more popular, Stempel looses his money to ... Story of the 1958 scandal involving the TV Quiz show "21". As weeks pass and Van Doren becomes more popular, Stempel looses his money to bookies and threatens "21" and NBC that he will go to New York District Attorney Frank Hogan if they don't get him back on television. Soon He is seen going into Hogan's office. Dick Goodwin, a young Harvard lawyer becomes intrigued when he reads that Hogan's findings from the Grand Jury's proceedings are sealed, and he suspects that NBC and "21" are involved in a rigged operation. He has trouble believing that someone with Van Doren's background and intellect could be involved in such a hoax. Stempel confesses to have been in on the fix, and insists that Van Doren got the answers up-front too. Van Doren loses on purpose, but is rewarded with a sizable contract from NBC to appear as a special correspondent on the Today show. Goodwin proceeds with the Congressional Hearings on the matter, and advises Van Doren not to make any statements supporting the show. However Van Doren, at the prompting of NBC Network Heads endorses the shows integrity and honesty. Stempel testifies before congress and implicates Van Doren, forcing Goodwin to call him as a witness where he admits his involvement with the conspiracy. Van Doren loses his job with TODAY and the university. Goodwin sensing victory against NBC, realizes that the studio producers Dan Enright (David Paymer) and Albert Freedman (Hank Azaria), the men responsible for providing the answers to the questions asked on the show, will not turn in their bosses and jeopardize their own futures in television; he silently watches the producers' testimony, vindicating the sponsors and the network from any wrongdoing.

Quiz Show (1995) starring Rob Morrow is a history of the quiz show scandal in the late 1950's. Rob Morrow plays a young lawyer working for a congressional subcommittee who thought there was something wrong in how the show was being run, and kept following leads until he found proof. The actors portrayed their characters very well. I purchased the film because I love Rob Morrow as an actor - he makes you actually feel the character he is playing. My husband and I have become fans of the TV program "Numb3rs" and were looking for movies in which Morrow had starred. Loved this movie. I remember this scandal happening when I was a little girl in the late 1950's. Well cast, well acted. Recommend.
