About this product

Product Information

Following in the fine tradition of inspiring inner-city underdog tales like STAND AND DELIVER, and TAKE THE LEAD, Doug Atchison's AKEELAH AND THE BEE is a story of overcoming odds that never descends into empty formula. The narrative centers around the character of Akeelah (Keke Palmer, in a star-making performance), a charming yet insecure 11 year old girl from Los Angeles' gang-ridden South Central district. Upon flipping channels after school one day, she lands on ESPN's coverage of the National Spelling Bee. Having recently become aware of her innate talent in this area, Akeelah cannot help but fantasize about the prospect of being a star of the bee circuit. The tragic problem -- intelligence of this kind is not valued in her community, where skills of athleticism and rapping are coveted far more than school smarts. Though Akeelah attempts to hide her academic acuity behind a rebellious attitude, she cannot resist the temptation to enter her school's spelling bee, at which her stellar performance attracts the attention of her idealistic principal, who pairs her with a mentor, a former professor named Joshua Larabee (the always riveting Laurence Fishburne, who re-embodies the wise iconoclast character he played so well in the chess movie SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER). Meanwhile, Akeelah's strong, practical mother, (played by Angela Bassett, who worked with Fishburne on the Tina Turner biopic WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?) while always supportive of her talented daughter, does not necessarily see the point of spending such time and energy on what will likely amount to a fleeting hobby. Perhaps taking its cue from the surprising popularity of Jeffrey Blitz's quirky documentary SPELLBOUND (2002), which explored spelling prodigies from diverse classes, races, and geographic locations, this drama makes what could be a narrow niche into a universal tale of triumph over adversity.

    Inspiring for Kids

Awesome, fun and inspiring movie for kids. Some slightly gritty slice-of-life-in-the-neighbourhood moments, but balanced with mostly cute and inspirational messages. Overall great value and worth a watch at least once. It'll have your kids wanting to learn their spelling by the time the credits roll.

  • Refreshing, Inspiring, Enjoyable - A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!

This was a very enjoyable watch from beginning to end! A wonderful movie.. I think it is ABOUT TIME there is a movie such as this one on the sport of the Spelling Bee! HOOR-AY!! There have been spelling bees for many generations, it is good that the young kids today (and of future generations) will get to watch this movie and perhaps be motivated that much more. When I was a kid, the spelling bee wasn't even SHOWN on TV let alone a MOVIE about it. This movie is AWESOME! I am so glad someone took the time to make this wonderful film, it couldn't have possibly been done any better. It is a family film, rated PG because there are a few bad words mentioned, but they are not too bad. The movie is refreshing, inspiring, enjoyable, and even a little funny! We loved the part where one of the ...

  • Sometime, You need to Be Quiet and Press Play

As I started looking for movies with my sons 8 & 13years old, my 8 year old asked," why are movies so stupid?" I said, "What?" "Mom they act like babies in the movies?" We started a family movies night each week we turn the A/C down bundle up on the couch with blankets and popcorn, drink, and movie candy box. 100 percent of the movies we watch during movie time is the newest Redbox animation. Frozen, Planes2,etc well they told me they still like cartoons movies but they wanted to watch more real life movies. So, I begin my quest of searching for movies that my boys could related to. This one is a winner! I have one son who straight A honor roll and the other who could be but feels he has to fit in and lower his standard. After watching this movie my 13 year old said, "that could be me if ...

  • A Great Educational Movie

I enjoyed the movie Akeelah and the Bee because it was a very educational and inciteful movie. With so many distasteful movies available for our young people, it was good to see a movie that was based on academics. This movie was based on a young girl excelling in spelling and arising above her circumstances. Laurence Fishburne played an excellent coach and motivator. I wish that this movie could be shown at every school in the inner city regardless of ethnicity. The movie displayed that every child can arise and be successful, we just need to motivate and encourage our young people.

  • Family Friendly Encouraging Real Life Educational Movie

I loved this movie. Aside from the fact that I enjoy teacher-motivating-student movies, I bought this for my 8 year old and I to watch since she is struggling with reading. It's hard to find family friendly movies these days without all the swearing in it..and this is one of those true gems that maintains the ability to be realistic and yet family friendly. Basically, Akeelah is a smart girl, doesn't want to enter the spelling bee because she gets harassed because she's smart. She lives in a poor black city area and attends a poor black city school. The principal convinces her (to make up for some of her absences and lower grades)..and has a collegue friend tutor her because she shows extraoridnary potentional. The story line is good for kids because it introduces kids to spelling bees ...
