Great characters, superb film
I first came across this film back in the 1970s. Famously it was copied as the template for the Hollywood blockbuster 'The Magnificent Seven'. Kurosawa, captures the mood and feeling of 16th Century Japan, with great characters who leap off the screen and into one's lap. While it is essentially a 'lads film' the background story is of everyday people conquering their fears. In this case a small village is constantly being raided by bandits and the local militia are unable or unwilling to help. In this superb film, the villagers decide to hire Samurai to help fight their oppressors, and some of the back story covers the Samurai and their different approaches to life and living. Having found their Samurai they all return to the village, but the villagers are frightened their protectors ... I first came across this film back in the 1970s. It is quite a long film, very involved and is ideally seen at least twice, but in fact is one of those that the more you watch it, the more you find is in it. One of the best films ever produced, worth every penny.

The slightly less magnificent samurai.
I should point out that much of this review is how The Seven Samurai compares to The Magnificent 7.A lot of the film takes place at night and there are a LOT of people on show and I found it hard to know who is a bad guy and who is a good guy. Most of the 7 have little development and frankly their American counterparts were better actors. On the plus side the photography is superb and the subtitles very easy to read.I think it is a very good film but not a great one and I do not regret buying it.I should point out that much of this review is how The Seven Samurai compares to The Magnificent 7.A lot of the film takes place at night and there are a LOT of people on show and I found it hard to know who is a bad guy and who is a good guy. This has to rank in the top five of the greatest films ever made, it is the backdrop for the magnificent seven, unlike the magnificent seven this is film shot in between shogun wars which most of the charcaters have fought in, they have achieved differing ranks from a farmers son, ronin to a samurai, the raw emotion is present throughout the film from the men being chosen to the fight in the village.
