This model is rather old by comparison and it is disappointing that Canon cannot offer a servicing facility. It takes really good pictures with the Canon lenses that I use, especially in low light conditions. For most conditions, leaving it in "auto" mode produces best results.

Having started with the Canon 400D several years ago, I found this an excellent step up from that, the image quality is excellent at the lower ISO range (100-400), it performs well at 800 and 1600 too, the noise really starts to be a bit more noticeable at 3200 and 6400, and the Hi ISO (12,800) does give a lot of noise but this can be used for creative effect and makes Black and White conversions more gritty and gives it more of a real printed image feel. Although only an amateur photographer, I have used it quite happily for professional situations, I shot my cousins wedding on it and recently did a friends wedding too and am really pleased with the results. I volunteer as the Parkrun photographer at my local event as well and have shot a Rotary Club awards evening on it. I have also used it for a photography course and the tutor, an established photographer for over 10 years, was quite impressed with the results. I think you could quite easily use it as a second body for situations where there is plenty of light and with a fast lens you could easily get low light pictures at ISO 800 that are good quality. It is an excellent camera that has good battery life and excellent optical quality.Read full review

The camera has a bigger and clearer back screen than the EOS 450D which I was using previously. It has a much improved built in flash, giving good clear photos even in the darkest of areas. the video recording is easy to use and now has sound. A very good camera

This is a really quality camera. The display is stunning and if you have an older Canon camera and are looking to upgrade then you will find this very easy to use in that most of the functions are similar. The big difference is that you can now shoot excellent HD video. I have been more than impressed with some of the shots I managed to take with this camera so far and I am learning and loving it day by day. The definition with the 18M is quite brilliant. I would have no hesitation in recommending this camera as being almost as good as the 7d but a lot less expensive.
Started with a 300d then recently upgraded to this 550d and the image quality and features are so much better. Great camera. I use it for astrophotography and it does the job great

This is a dream camera for me. I only needed a Body as I was upgrading from a Canon EOS300D,and the lenses etc. are compatible for both cameras. Already I am finding features that I never dreamed of. One big feature for me is fact that I can set the ISO to enable very low light photography without using flash. Some features may be considered cosmetic, but I am relishing the fact that I have choices that I only previously read about. I did a photography course run by a professional photographer, and she rates this camera very highly, that's good enough for me!
This is a brilliant camera, admittedly it's younger, newer brother the 600D might have a few more features but they are both very similar in terms of what's on the inside. The sensor is very good as well as the numerous different movie modes. There isn't really much I can say bad about this camera as it meets all my needs and wants. The product description on Ebay is very good, so you know what your getting. If you want to get into DSLR's this is a good starting point but as you learn more it will take you through to some more advanced photography and filmography.
I first bought it because my EOS 400D had no rear display and the Rebel T2i can record full HD movies. So no separate camera is needed for taking movies. After taking just a few pictures I realized the quality of the pictures is much better, the colors are much more natural. Right now I got two of these, one with a wideangle zoom 15-30mm and the other one with a zoom 28-280mm or the normal 18-85mm if I don't want to carry extra weight.
I already owned a 550d camera and I wanted another to be able to use on a daily basis, one that I wouldnt mind if it got knocked. I decided on a refurbished one, but when I got it I was delighted that it was absolutely brand new and never been opened. The quality of picture is superb and the auto focus anti vibration lenses that are available are a dream to use. I have bought old film cameras with af lenses from Ebay too and I use the lenses on this body. I cant recommend the 550d enough. There are lots of videos and guides available on Youtube and the Internet to teach anybody how to become a "pro". I like the programme mode which allows me to control a lot of the aspects of the shoot. I also like the Av mode which allows me to create stunning depth of field photos, from blurry backgrounds in portraits to wild flowers in the foreground with full landscapes behind. I love it!Read full review
I'd traded in a previous, older DSLR for a Canon bridge camera. I liked the Canon layout and results and especially the long zoom lens. Whilst on a hoLiday to Ireland to visit an old school friend an his wife, I was able to use his 550D. I loved the results and realised that I missed the versatility of an SLR. My friend had a zoom lens which he wanted to sell, so, I splashed out on the lens and looked at eBay for a body. I chose this one because of the price, (it is refurbished). The seller acted quickly to send me the body which arrived promptly. I've taken many shots with it and I'm very happy. Next stop, eBay for some home studio lighting! My wife was originally not too happy but I've promised her a new handbag of her choice. Points to watch. The camera is an import so won't qualify for the Canon guarantee. That said, the refurb appears to have been carried out very professionally. Secondly, the 550D is now end of life and has been replaced by the 660D. For me the difference in price between the 550D and the 660D especially the fact that this is a good refurb is, as they say, a no-brainier. To conclude, consider the 550D, look at a refurb rather than new, and get out there and take some pics!Read full review
