Okay, so I'm a push over for British films. A typical slice of English life in the 1930s. Two elderly sisters living alone on an enchanted hillside cottage. Find a Polish boy washed to shore. They look after him, and the one sister, falls in love with him. After all no matter how old we get, our taste for the opposite sex never really changes. She, Ursula, dreams of him, unrequited love, she knows its wrong, but she adores him. When he is lured away by a beautiful woman, it breaks her heart. Another great film to cozy up to on those rainy nights. I love that every frame of the film is like a painting. All the senses are touched by this sweet film. Watch it. Max Rainet. 8-6-2008 I just re-watched this wonderful story. Maggie Smith and Judy Dench are absolutely marvelous. This time I watched the documentary in the bonus features on the dvd. It talks about the film and how it came to be. Don't forget to watch this too, a real bonus for movie fans. Famous British actor, Charles Dance, gives us his directorial debut with beloved British Dames Judi Dench & Maggie Smith, in a screen adaptation of the short story by William J. Locke. Senior sisters Ursula (Dench) & Janet (Smith) cohabitate by the sea in Cornwall, in the 1930's. As sisters, they are quite different & often at odds with each other. Thus, their relatively typical British lives in retirement are spiced up by that subtle friction. During one of their gazes out the window towards the ocean beating up against the craggy rocks, Ursula spots something unusual on the sand. As the 2 elderly women approach the object, they find it's a living young man who's washed ashore. Ursula decides to take him in & nurse him to health much to Janet's chagrin. He can't speak English so they have no idea who he is or what his background is, either. But, it's not long before they figure out the young man's (Daniel Bruhl) a budding, undiscovered violinist from Poland named Andreas. A neighboring visitor, a gorgeous artist (Natasha McElhorne), immediately spots Andreas's exceptional talent because her own brother is a master. Tension builds between characters as they compete for their positions in relation to the rescued violinist. Their housekeeper (Miriam Margolyes) provides comic relief in an emotional drama that surely is fitting for 2 of the greatest actors of the 20th & 21st centuries. What could have been such an ordinary little film that got buried in a box is brought to life by extraordinary character acting, period depiction precision & scrumptious classical violin music. If you like this film, see Bette Davis & Lillian Gish in "The Whales of August," which just might be this one's superior!Read full review
I work at a resort which also has a DVD selection. Ladies in Lavender is included in that selection. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of this movie the DVD gave it's all and needed replacing. There is nothing to dislike about this DVD. It has been very popular with our guests. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are very popular actresses that did their parts in this movie proud. The story line is set in WWII England and surrounds the relationship between two "old maide" sisters and the complications of finding and helping an injured soldier. This DVD is a most likely a 4 star out of 5 only due to this DVD having been on the market for some time now. However when our guests read the description on the DVD jacket it draws them in. Great story line.
(**** out of ****) One of the best and finest period dramas I have seen and it features a Bloomington native (YEA !) playing the violin. Truly the most spellbinding music I have ever heard, enough to bring me to tears ! There was only one nag I have to make about the film...How Andrea actually ended on the seashore was never elaborated to. The viewerer is bound to make his/her own conclusion on how this situation occurred, but beyond that, the film is positively dazzling and carries a beautiful message. Love knows no age, and caring no boundaries. Music, itself is a healer and is so integral that it can communicate for us when words do not. This is a must-see for fans of Dame Judy and the marvelous Maggie Smith. Definitely a tear-jerker but the ending will make you stand and applaud !Read full review
Maggie Smith and Judy Dench deliver very emotionally engaging roles and you feel and see the sadness building as well as the joy. It has its ups and downs but ends well. I think it is a real English inevitable drama that begins with a near tragedy and ends with a dramatic but uplifting crescendo. I loved this film, it saddened me for a bit but gave me much to think about. Youth and age play an integral part of this story. You are taken to a time more innocent and unassuming. I would watch this again. Would like to have it on Blu Ray as well but it wasn't made on Blu Ray.

Who doesn't love Maggie Smith and Judy Dench see them in "A Room With A View" Smith and Dench play aging spinster sisters who share a quiet little hamlet on the beach..the day after a storm they go outside to survey the damage and come upon a young Man laying injured on the beach..as they care for him they find he does not speak english, but plays the violin as an angel would play a harp..struggling with their own selfish desires to have him stay or help him realize his dream as a professional violinist they argue and mourn when the right choice is laid down before them..a sweet story of love, jealousy and loss that will have you weeping and laughing with joy..mixed with romance comedy and the right amount of drama this is a movie not to be missed!! 5 out of 5 bars!!
I must say that AT FIRST I hated the film...it had a voice that kept describing what was going on...then one day when I decided to take a look at it again I saw that there was a choice given, at the very first of the film, that offered the "voice', or not to voice...I apparently did not click onto it, so, this time I did and all turned out to be WELL. The film was wonderful!!! I manage to se it at least once every week...great story line, fantastic actors..........YAY!!!

Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are wonderful in this film. They play two sisters who live in a coastal home in pre-war England. Their lives change dramatically when an injured foreign (Polish) young man was washed ashore near their home . They immediately decide to nurse him back to health...one sister, Maggie Smith takes on the nursing with a motherly instinct...the other, Judi Dench takes on the nursing with a deep longing for "a missed life"...never having been married. The film is a joy...a warm and touching story of the goodness in human nature.
My friend in England told me to watch out for this movie. Wasn't on Nexfic or Acorn as probably too old so purchased it at a very good price from Ebay. Arrived very swiftly. It is soooo very British set in Cornwall which evoked many memories ~ with the two most wonderful actresses alive today. Very moving, happy and sad. I cried and clapped. I am now passing it along to my sister.
