SynopsisA destination for beachgoers for a century, the Manhattan Beach Pier extends 928 feet out over the Pacific with the octagonal Roundhouse” situated at the far end. Both the pier and Roundhouse have, through the years, come to symbolize this affluent seaside community. The concept for a pier at its present location can be traced to 1898, when the Potencia Townsite Company acquired the land. The first survey map, recorded in 1902, clearly labeled the object at the end of Center Street (now Manhattan Beach Boulevard) as the Old Iron Pier.” The pier has been storm-ravaged, rebuilt, and restored while a century of recreation, world-class sporting events, and celebrity visitors have added to its appeal as one of Los Angeles County’s notable coastal attractions., A destination for beachgoers for a century, the Manhattan Beach Pier extends 928 feet out over the Pacific with the octagonal "Roundhouse" situated at the far end. A resident of Manhattan Beach for 43 years, author and former mayor Jan Dennis has drawn on her extensive personal archive of vintage images to create this unique history. Her previous books include A Walk Beside the Sea and Images of America: Manhattan Beach. This new volume illustrates the pier's diverse history through photographs while also presenting both important and little-known facts. Book jacket.

I grew up in Manhattan Beach. It's my hometown. We spent alot of time at the pier and beach. We had an old Volkswagon bus that, believe it or not, we'd drive down that steep hill to park and then have to drive back up. We grew up watching movies at the old movie theatre there, just off the beach. I was interesting and informative to find how and why the pier was put there in the first place. The old pictures are amazing. When you see the old pier and only a few homes it makes you wish your family had come to Manhattan Beach to settle earlier than the early 60's!!
