The gem was sewn up manually...and badly along with some sort of clothes glue. When I contacted the seller, I was told she didn't know the hem was altered, I know this as I already have the same dress which I damaged, so bought a replacement from the seller. For the sake of £30 and goodwill, I would have expected her to refund it, but she wouldn't. I have never worn it so I put it up on eBay I was unaware it had been altered.
