  • How the New Yorker lost its way

The author is a writer who was a respected member of the New Yorker's staff during the Shawn era. She describes in accurate detail how the magazine once worked and stood for, and how in recent years what had long been the leading independent voice of the magazine became, under new middle-of-the-road commercial-friendly ownership, just another magazine -- weakened, commercialized. Both its independent views and fun are gone, along with its leadership position in contemporary issues. Even the cartoons have lost their punch. Some don't notice the change, but it's fundamental and the loss of this voice marks the end of an era. Excellent historical reporting!
