Good for running small Linux distros.
Good for running lightweight Linux distro on 9-year old Acer laptop. I was able try to try out Tiny Core Linux on a 512MB SD card by substituting this adapter for the hard drive, whose contents I did not wish to disturb. Don't try to run Windows from SD card as it will run very slowly. You may see articles on the web that suggest that you can use very cheap IDE to CF card adapters for this, but I think the laptops that were used were very old, they probably ran Windows 95 or 98. I tried one of these, but my laptop's BIOS wouldn't recognise the CF adapter.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Looks like it's made well, but I can't get it to work.
Looks like it's made well, but I can't get it to work. I Installed a Linux distro on an SD card, which I inserted into the IDE to SD adaptor and then put it in an older Packard Bell laptop instead of its IDE harddrive. The BIOS recognizes the IDE to SD adaptor, but flashes a warning because of the software version of the chip on the IDE to SD card adaptor (version 1.2), and doesn't do anything more. So I can't get it to work. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get this IDE to SD card adaptor to work, please let me know...Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Retro gaming on both laptop and desktop
Brilliant, Not only can I used it on a laptop, but bought a 2.5" IDE *Laptop* to 3.5" IDE *Desktop* adapter for it to use on my desktop retro build also. Ruining Dos and win 98 gaming from a sd is a joy.

Great way to rescue old but important PCs now that IDE hard drives are no longer readily available

Wow!.. An excellent adaptor!
This SD card to IDE adapter is an absolutely perfect gadget to convert an older generation PC/Laptop or a portable hard drive audio player kicking & screaming into the 21st century! Make no mistake, this gadget is about as good as they get. Adapter is a very high quality circuit board containing a controller chip which can be configured to load or boot windows / Linux etc. Limitations is that the SD card has to be 32gb. However I haven't tested bigger cards so they may or may not work with this unit. One thing though, if you purchase a class 10 SD card you might be surprised to get comparable or (higher) boot speeds than a standard IDE hard drive. It's all about experimentation. Get ready to be blown away with almost SSD like speeds in whatever PC you are using. You won't be disappointed with this adapter.
