Ideal alternative to Helicoils
I wanted to put a machine screw into a car radiator overflow pipe and so I needed to make the plastic pipe threaded. At first I thought I would have to buy a Helicoil kit which is quite expensive for just one use so I searched Ebay and eventually found these little beauties. All you need is make sure the item you are threading is slightly smaller than the external thread size. I did that by using drill bits increasing in size by 0.5mm until the insert would almost fit in but not quite then I put a smear of gasket sealant on the insert thread. Using a large screwdriver and constant pressure the insert screwed its way into the pipe until flush with the end. I now have a threaded insert in my radiator that will not rust and will accept a screw that I can remove to flush the radiator. I ... I would highly recommend this type of insert with many uses in plastic, wood and soft metal like aluminium. I doubt you would have the strength to screw it into steel as unlike Helicoils it does not compress. Other than that it is great.
