I am a World War One fanatic which led me to give the movie a try. I am glad I did! The movie's title is a great injustice because it gives the impression of a "chick flick" and although it involves a love story, it also provides action, the visual horrors of war, mystery, and the sense of the character's, as well as Veteran's and families losses. The main character's tenacity and unwavering quest to uncover the truth of her lover's death (in combat) leads to answers that the viewer, by movie's end, had expected would be an impossibility. As a collector of WW1 memorabilia, and researching these items I was impressed with the historical accuracy of everything in the movie. Guys, watch it with your girls; there will be plenty of tears at the end.
This movie which represents fine film making at it's ultimum best. Great love story which is set against a back drop of first world war in France is brought to life with wonderful acting on all levals, great direction, great costume which are historically accurate, wonderful photography and musical soundtrack. Truly a feast for the senses. One does not mind the subtitles because you soon realise to extract anything from the original would be a crime.Destined to hold a top spot in the best of the best of all time great films, truly a masterpiece in every sense of the word. The story which is sometimes tragic in nature has an unspoken word of faith in all things which weaves constantly through the narrative, and ultimately leaves the viewer beliieving in the power of fate and destiny. Highly recommended.Read full review
Excellent. This is a long, strange, dark romance worth watching a couple of times. It is very FRENCH and how do I say it.... a movie buff's sort of film. You have to pay attention. A film goer develops a taste for Jean-Pierre Jeunet films, and this one certainly delivers. It has the sort of inter / inner weaving of a novel, it's touching and dark and brutal at times with a delicate love affair hanging in the balance. It isn't a film for everyone... but as a follower of Jeunet, I love all of his films... his cinematic prowess thrills me, and I simply find his films entertaining. If that's you... you'll love this film. If you're looking for Grease or Dirty Dancing... your best bet is to look else where on the movie shelf. I very much enjoyed this film. Blessings, Max Rainet. **If you found this information at all helpful, please take a moment to select the "yes" button below. "A Very Long Engagement" stars Audrey Tautou, one of my favorite actresses. In the film she portrays a young French woman who has been crippled by both a case of Polio at a young age and also by the disappearance of her fiance, Manech, who left to fight in the war and never returned home. In her quest to find him, she encounters many different characters, some of whom are absolutely hilarious and some of whose stories are truly heart-wrenching. Trust me, you'll love it!
This film is excellent! While never having experienced Trench Warfare, the battle scenes, for me, were vivid recreations of passages found in Robert Graves novel, 'Good-Bye To All That'. The novel has earned the reputation of the best book of it's kind in describing actual conditions in France during WWI. This attention to historical detail, coupled with a beautiful love story, makes this film truly worth seeing.
