I'd been looking at YouTube videos and so on to find a good UniVibe clone, and this one gets the 'bang for buck' award IMHO. There are plenty of boutique UniVibe clones out there that run from $150 up to $600-700 or more for an original. I'm sure some or most of the boutique ones sound awesome, but this one (I paid $30-35 for mine, I think) makes a sound that is VERY GOOD and is a great starter or hobbyist pedal. Yes, if I made my living with my gear I'd step up to a pricier pedal. I don't know yet if this will have any reliability issues, but it seems okay. It's almost too small for my hands; I would accept it being a bit larger if it meant it was easier to plug things in and the knobs were a bit bigger. If you truly want to jump in for a decent UniVibe clone, I might also recommend the larger Danelectro Cool Cat Vibe, which also sounds really cool (maybe even a lot cooler) than this one. When I got mine I put a battery in it first, not knowing that it was almost dead. There was little or no effect at first; I had to turn the knobs WAY UP to get it to work at all. Then I plugged it in with a wall wart and it worked fine, so you might to watch for that. Then I turned it up with a maple-neck Strat with low (or 'vintage') output single coils into my Marshall JCM600 and immediately found myself in Robin Trower land. It also slipped right into 'Jimi @ Woodstock' tones like it was made for it. On the clean channel I tried the classic beginning of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' and it sounded like gold to me. I may not have the most discriminating ear, but as I say if you want to try a UniVibe clone for these classic sounds this is a great way to go.Read full review
I bought the Danelctro Chicken Salad Vibrato Effect Pedal as a cheap alternative for a Univibe Clone (150 dollars at least for the Dunlop Clone) and it is just that and a lot more... For less than 40 dollars (transatlantic shipping included) I got a decent clone that if you google a little u can even tweak it and get an even more realistic tone... If combined with a Dunlop Original Wah pedal the Wah effect gets surrealistically freaky! With the right setting u can even use the Chicken Salad as a phaser or an ordinary vibrato! Only disadvantage its only ONE HOUR duration when on a 9V battery... Over All the phrase Value For Money was meant for that product...
For $30 it's hard to go wrong with this pedal. Does it compare to $200 boutique pedals? Probably not, but it'll do a reasonable job on 75% of what the big boys can do (and the Chicken Salad's much less painful to replace if damaged or stolen). The only potential downside with this pedal might be the durability of its plastic case, but it's no big deal to re-house the circuit in a more substantial metal enclosure. Highly recommended!!! ****** One other caveat: be sure to buy the 9 volt external power supply, if you don't already have one handy. The Chicken Salad will literally drain a brand new battery dead in less than five minutes.
This pedal is exactly what I was looking for! It does the job that I expected, for a lot less money than other effect pedals and amplifiers.Danelectro has proven its quality throughout the many years they have been in business.Whether you are just getting into the music business,or a seasoned musician,it is worth your while to try Danelectro brand effcts pedals.
Really sounds good and authentic. I had an original uni vibe in the early seventies. Doesn't look the same but sounds very similar. I like putting it ahead of overdrive/distortion in the signal chain. Has more subtle effect and it can have a harsh treble boost if put after overdrive/distortion.
