A superb but disturbing expose of a fear based culture.
I've heard references to this film since it came out but I didn't understand the meaning of the title until I watched another documentary on the subject matter. It just never sparked my interest enough to look any further. Having seen it now, I think it's right up there with Michael Moore's other movies, like 'Fahrenheit 9/11' and 'The Big One'. The style is the same, as you would expect but it's humourous and upbeat, though the subject is obviously very sobering at times. Mr. Moore attempts to find out why America has such a disproportionately high murder rate by shooting, which is ultimately blamed on nightly news of murders and other media like games and movies, coupled with ridiculously easy availability of guns and ammunition. By those measures, it's actually incredible how few ... By those measures, it's actually incredible how few people get shot, as accidents alone could go into the thousands, given the approximately 250 million guns in the country! Basically, it boils down to the Constitutional right to bear arms. For those who do not live in America, guns are seen as a God-given right, to enable the people to defend themselves from their enemies, foreign and domestic. So you have a battle going on between the NRA (National Rifle Association) and the victims and their families of gun crime. I'm not sure which is more tragic, the unfortunate use of guns by insane individuals like Dylan and Eric who are the main inspiration for the film, or the public's outright failure to organise themselves and defend against their own tyrannical government, who now wish to strip them of their only remaining effective means of self-defence against their own military. The people live in fear of eachother when it's the government that should be treated with suspicion, especially since their involvement in 9/11, (as but one of many similar examples of government sponsored terrorism that I could mention), for the very purpose of convincing the public that they need to fear eachother in the first place! It's an open and shut case, provable in any court of law. If you don't believe or know it yet, you're in denial, because the conclusion that you would inevitably be forced to reach is that the only way to solve the problem of mass corruption is to take responsibility for your own mind and actions. It's just so much easier to blame someone else and governments know this and take very aggressive advantage of racism and any other politically useful form of mass ignorance. This whole worldwide financial chaos is a symptom of our collective lack of responsibility. Perhaps the best example of this is that otherwise intelligent people ask how 9/11 could be a government conspiracy when it would involve so many (presumed honest) people but huge faceless Corporations control (read own) the government and they are NOT all honest; far from it! Someone blew up the buildings so why not those who have the means, money and motive? Deep down everyone knows this but many are afraid to confront the overwhelming evidence. Do yourself a favour and devote just some of the time you'd normally be watching t.v. to watching all of the Youtube etc. documentaries on 9/11. Will this review even be displayed? If it isn't, it proves that a conspiracy exists that controls what can and can't be discussed. This movie deals with 9/11 to some degree, though woefully inadequately, as with Fahrenheit 9/11 itself as the most important questions were never asked. Why? People think they're informed. Think again!

Unbelievable, but not the only shocking element in this powerful exploration of violence in the USA. Moore's inquiries into why America is such a violent society are sparked by the Columbine massacre - the 1999 high school shooting in which 13 people were killed by two malcontent teens who then took their own lives. At first, it seems his answer will be obvious: readily available guns. But what appears to be a simplistic anti-gun polemic broadens in scope, to tar the media, ... Bowling For Columbine (DVD 2003)
I was again very impressed with Michael Moore, after watching Fahrenheit 911. This is a must see dvd. This documentary received an Oscar Academy Award for best documentary and it shows. It is about the gun culture in the USA and the school shooting in Columbine. He also compares the gun culture in the USA with the gun culture in Canada.

brutal and honest film, pulls no punches.If you have children who love guns, let them watch this when they are old enough to understand it.[did you know we brits are one of the top 5 exporters of firearms, and guess where they go......? I must admit i had no idea we made and sold arms worldwide, Its no wander they end up on the streets of our cities, talk about hypocritical.
