Employment opportunities exist in the South-East for individuals of specific skills and experiences. However, those with the much-needed skills and experiences are scarce in the South-East, but relatively abundant in the North, where unemployment has permeated the ranks of the skilled workers and managers. Hence the phenonomen of Britain's new industrial gypsies - the long distance weekly commuters. The study reports on those who have decided to take up employment in the South-East, who live in lodgings during the working week, returning to home and family in the North only at weekends.
