For the Britten enthusiast who seeks to collect all the definitive recordings of his orchestral works this cheaply priced box set is excellent value. Where possible, recordings conducted by Britten are used. On other occasions, generally it is the first recordings that are favoured and the sound quality is clear and precise. However, the word 'complete' is a misnomer. For example, there is a major work - The World Of The Spirit' - which utilises soloists, choir and full orchestra and has a duration of 45 minutes - yet this is not included, presumably because Decca were unable to secure the rights or permission to use the fine recording made of this piece by Richard Hickox. However, this box is worth your money, particularly since it includes more than a few raritie. I might wish for slightly more comprehensive sleeve notes but given the low price of the set, such a complaint would be churlish! Andy Martin (for UNIT).Read full review
