About this product

Product Information

Jennifer Worth came from a sheltered background when she became a midwife in the Docklands in the 1950s. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying, not only because of their grimly impoverished surroundings, but also because of what they were expected to endure. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour. Attached to an order of nuns who had been working in the slums since the 1870s, Jennifer tells the story not only of the women she treated, but also the community of nuns (including one who was accused of stealing jewels from Hatton Garden) and the camaraderie of the midwives with whom she trained. Funny, disturbing and incredibly moving, Jennifer's stories bring to life the colourful world of the East End in the 1950s.

  • Not too entertaining

Its a biography about a midwife and about the life in 1950s.To be honest the book is'nt too bad its mainly about the authors visits to patients house and how she delivered her patients babies. It does get a little boring at times where u desperately feel like flicking over few pages or so.Over all I'm not a big fan on reading an auto biography and to me its not too appealing.

  • An excellent read!

Exactly what I wanted - the copy with the east end maps and he collection of old photos. Book in excellent condition.

  • Read this boook and you will be there !

This is a very good book, full of wit and fantastic observations of character and the way of life in the 50's eastend. I have also read the two following books to this all of which are great reads wether you like biographical or historical or if you are just looking for a good read you will love this author.

  • Great story!

Read this book a few years ago then saw the series advertised on the TV. Reading the book again then watching the series makes me visualise things better. Find it really funny!
