This lens, like all L grade lenses, works well on either crop or FF bodies. It gives L quality optics without the weight associated with many lenses of this length. Its autofocus is fast and crisp, the results are sharp and for the money usually asked for these used, this has to be the best introductory choice for someone interested in trying photographing birds in flight. The lack of stabilisation is not important since you'll be using high shutter speeds to freeze the bird movement. And IS adds weight, and is a complication not needed for moving targets. Many pros keep their expensive IS turned off since it can slow down AF times, the last thing you want with flying birds. I still have mine, and have no intention of selling it - its still as useful as it was when I bought mine from a ebay seller. And going by prices currently on view, it has lost very little value, unlike a new one would have.Read full review

I bought this for long lens photography with my Leica SL2 using the Sigma adapter. As the Leica has in body stabilisation and I use a monopod for most pictures, the absence of an image stabiliser in the lens is not a problem, and keeps the weight down. The results are excellent with sharp contrasty photos. Focus snaps in quickly with auto or manual focus. It is light enough to hand hold and is sharp at maximum aperture. Would I buy it again? Yes, it was a good decision.

I bought this lens in the hope that it would produce pin-sharp images with my 7D Mark 2, for bird photography. I was not disappointed! It also produces great pictures with a 1.4 converter - but a high shutter speed and at least a monopod is needed then. Or even better, a good tripod. Build quality is brilliant and it's a pleasure to use. Compared to the 100-400 L it's a lightweight lens, but it's by no means small. No regrets with this purchase at all.

I am delighted with this excellent Canon 400mm 5.6 lens. The images I produce with it are superb thanks to the quality build of this item. In the winter I mostly take photos birds in our quiet Devon country lanes, and the 400mm give me a good reach, enabling me to capture wildlife that I would not normally be able to take with my other Canon lenses, so top marks for this product.
