Although this lens has been around for a while it still has a performance to give good service as a macro / portrait lens. No stabilisation or f-stop limiters, but the USM focusing is ultra-fast which helps with fast moving macro subjects, especially in multi-shot mode. Sharpness is incredible for a lens of this price and it also has a maximum f2.8 aperture making low depth of field portraits easy. Nice and light too - could easily be left on the camera as a standard lens. A good second-hand example is great value.

Don't get me wrong it's a great lens for macro work but i'm a luxury watch dealer and for me it still couldn't quite do the job. For example; if im shooting at say around 15cm away and trying to get the dial of the watch in focus it will only focus on a certain part and blur the rest. This is great for singling out objects but not if you want to focus on the whole object. Even changing the aperture to 18+ it just about does the shop but then its not as sharp. Still a good lens though but it's certainly only mid range.

I bought this lens to get sharper close up images than is possible with the eos500d kit lenses with extension tubes. The 18-55 kit lens is sharp at its mid-range but soft at 55mm. The 55-250 kit lens is also very sharp from its mid range to full zoom, but soft at the lower end (55-70). This 60mm prime macro lens fills the gap between the two. It is a solid lens, reasuringly heavier than the kit lenses and returns very sharp images from f4-f11. The 60mm focal length is ideal on an APS-C camera being equivalent to a full frame 96mm. Focusing is quick, accurate and quiet. I have no regrets about buying this lens and it has become an essential part of my kit.
I can not say that this lens is not excellent and may be good, that I marked it is not a fare marking. The reason behind it is because I have not used it a lot. Where I have used it I liked it very much. Yes I would reccomend it to others to buy it. I found it easy to use, and very good on micro and face photographs. Thats what this lens is made for. With my Canon EOS 50D I found it okey. You need a tripod and a remote switch to have excellet results. I am still learning from it, and I am happy that I bought this lens.
Nice lens not yet used a lot. If I could pick a fault it would be that other lenses would be a lot better from distance than this. ie picture of a bee on a flower. Still good in your bag.
