Astonishing documentary about a notorious New York sex scandal in which a respected teacher and one of his three sons were accused of sexually molesting schoolboys. What makes the highly-praised film extraordinary is that the Friedman family made an almost obsessive chronicle, in home movies,of their lives - including the sudden eruption of a prosecution that appalled their upper middle class neighbourhood. Were the Friedmans a family of paedophiles or were they the victims of absurd suspicions, a warped police investigation and parental hysteria whipped up by reporters? You may still be wondering after seeing this extraordinary real-life film.
This is quite simply the most fascinating documentary I have seen in a long time. Concerning one family but focusing on a father and son involved in what seemed like an open and shut case of multiple abuse of many children, But the makers of this film went deeper on both sides of the argument, Exposing police lies and falsified witness statement, The sheer hysteria over this most sensitive of subjects makes for uncomfortable but compulsive viewing, The father is guilty of an offence but not the one he was charged with, But his son who grew up in prison is almost certainly innocent of every charge levelled at him, The reality is child abuse remains such a horrifying crime that coupled with media led hysteria, Somebody has to pay. It's a credit to the film makers that they were able to stay objective and dig that little bit deeper, I cannot recommend this highly enough.Read full review
