I loved to watch this series when it was on HBO years ago and thought I'd like to see it again. For the price you can't go wrong. but these are copies and you get what you pay for. The first dvd keep stopping and jumped ahead of the story when it started up again. The rest of the discs played ok with no problems. So if you liked the show on TV, this will be a good refresher of the very interesting characters.

I had only heard about this series, found it on sale and decided to buy it. I did not get into it at first but, it fascinated me. I am not a person of that erra but have worked for people who lived through the depression. I found that it was refreshing to watch something out of character of today's times. How people struggled, went without and it brought out the best in some to share and the worst to rob and hurt others. I found only a couple of flaws which interest me. In a scene where a young woman was being raped her blouse was ripped and she had a lime green comfort cut bra. Back in those days they wore strictly white underware and were very much coned shaped bras. And colored vehicles did not come in play till 1940's. So many of the colored vehicles shown were painted props. But the show kept me on my toes because I really knew very little on the erra and of Carnival atmosphere. Very worth watching, even if just to get sense of the erra.Read full review
Carnivale is an awesome show about the ongoing battle between light and darkness set during the American dust bowl. The scions of light and darkness are an escaped murderer with the power to heal those he touches by blighting his surroundings and a devout preacher plagued by dark, old testament miracles. Their roles are purposefully left ambiguous in the beginnings of this fascinating series as we see them developing in a world of freaks and the downtrodden. The acting is remarkable, with a wide array of conflicted characters constantly struggling against the weight of hard times and the palpable threat of genuine evil. The story is well paced and character-focused. The soundtrack is a dark reflection of traditional carnival fair and apocalyptic at the same time. I cannot recommend this quirky, supernatural period piece enough for fans of horror and the surreal.Read full review
All the good shows that once dominated HBO are gone ladies and gentlemen. This was the crowning gem of them all. Forget the Sopranos! CARNAVALE had it all, sex, drama, violence, love; it was everything a viewer could hope for and more! What an amazing show! Thank god for the DVD format as early cancellation took this compelling plot driven masterpiece off the air, leaving a void in the HBO line up that only ROME could fill. And even that show was given an early grave due to production costs. It was certainly NOT for lack of viewers! What can I say? Shows like the Sopranos are cheap to produce as compared to the period piece that CARNAVALE was. Rooted in the era of the Great Depression, the show followed a small time circus troop that traveled small town America in the 1920’s. Visually the show was stunning. It had a gritty genuine quality that really embodied the era. I will say this; the show was comprised of a lot of different elements: the show was supernatural in nature, but would go whole episodes without supernatural events rather it would focus on character development and the progression of the plot which included religious symbolism all leading up to an epic battle between the forces of good and evil. A remarkable show written by gutsy talented people. If HBO hadn’t been so quick to cut its loses and cancel this show so quickly maybe I wouldn’t have canceled HBO from my cable subscription. CARNAVALE is an interesting show that would appeal to an intelligent audience. Do yourself a favor and pick up your copy of season one today!Read full review
I never got the chance to see this when it came out. My wife and I both like dramas/mysteries with a supernatural twist. But the story needs to be carried by good writing and not by the actors doing out of character behavior just for the shock value. Luckily, Carnival is the former. I just wish that it had lasted for more than two sessions.
