Neil Gaiman's dark modern fairytale is somewhat reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland only much more coherent and much more sinister. An entertaining read for young and old. I first read the American version of this book, illustrated by Dave McKean many years ago. While I do miss the menace that McKean's somewhat abstract and unsettling illustrations brought to the story, I much admire Chris Riddle's work and think that his more realistic illustrations in this European version better reflect Gaiman's since of humor and whimsy.
I like the book so much it only took me a day to read. In my opinion the movie is better, but the book is not far behind. There's some characters in the stop motion movie Coraline that aren't in the book. And of course not everything that happens in the movie happens in the book and vice versa, which for me didn't come as a surprise. Overall I'm glad I purchased the book and have no regrets!
