Available space along the shaft on which these 9-tooth chain sprocket was designed to fit does not allow use of more common end-mounted sprockets instead of the OEM center-mounted sprocket without causing chain-alignment problems with the fixed-location driven sprocket. So generic substitutes are barely workable and even then can cause faster wear due to alignment failure. Add to that the certainty that these OEM sprockets are hardened as compared to far-east sourced sprockets which are only claimed to be made from hardened steel, and at least for me, the balance of value for price paid strongly favored going with these OEM parts. To obtain high gear reduction, the OEM design called for using the smallest workable drive sprocket which is 9-tooth. As a result, these very-small primary-drive sprockets take a hell of a beating and wear out long before the larger down-stream in the drive train sprockets develop comparable wear. The number of chain link engagements per mile traveled is VERY HIGH for these tiny 9-tooth sprockets which is why they wear out so commonly. If they were fitted with an idler sprocket to maintain tension, they would last longer. That's a potential modification which could extend time between replacements.Read full review

This is a way better part than the original. Has a key for the shaft instead of a dimple in the sprocket. Looks much more beefy than the original as well. I have broke 2 Dixon sprockets this year so we will see how this one does, but I'd bet money it lasts.
