Oh for goodness sake it's just a puppet! In testomony to this film I can only tell you this story- I showed this film to my son when he was six, he was mesmerized for the entire thing. I only had a video copy at the time and at the end of the film the making of Dark Crystal starts immediately. Oh well thought I, he might find it interesting to see how much hard work went into making all the scenery and puppets and let the thing run on. After five minutes I realised that something was bothering him. "Are you ok?" I asked him. "You've ruined it now!" was his barked reply. As if by showing him the mirror in the card trick I had shattered the illusion. Perhaps so for less able magicians, but not for Jim Henson. You know it's a puppet, I know it's a puppet, he knows it's a puppet and then something magical happens. It's a frog or a pig or a gelfling or an old one-eyed, cantancerous, witch. Needless to say my son watched the movie over and over again each time forgeting that they were foam and wire and plastic and trully believing that this enchanting magical world existed. And if I have my way so will my grand children and great grand children. If you haven't seen this film you absolutely must, it really is stunning and an absolute classic. Please be aware though that some of the scenes could be quite scary for the very young or sensitive.Read full review
