I was just a teenager when I first heard this in the early 60's and thought it was cool then and it still sounds as fresh today. I love Paul Desmond's breathy alto sax sound which just sings and Joe Morello's drumming is so tight without overpowering. There is a variety of unconventional time signatures but the cleverness of the playing doesn't overshadow the musicality, (although definitely for listening rather than dancing to unless you want to slip a disc). Dave Brubecks piano can be fast and furious or delicately soft and moody - I just love it. Eugene Wright's bass is always there and the "less is more" approach is just right if you know what I mean! I like lots of modern music and I know times change but good music and musicianship will outlast us all. This is a classic example and this remastered cd version is just so crisp I can't get over what good value it is.Read full review
A well known music critic once said 'modern jazz is an acquired taste', he obviously had never heard The Dave Brubeck Quartet. 'A monumental album' the record notes say, a true masterpiece, I say. If you like modern musical styles, you will love this. I'd only ever heard these tracks on vinyl. Dave's virtuoso piano playing is truly awesome but in no way overshadows the efficient time keeping of the best jazz drummer of all time. The rich, mellow and at times songlike quality of the double bass just has to be heard to be believed. There is no alto sax, it's just pure audio gold. The quirky time signatures, the weird and wonderful key combinations and changes, the whole ambience comes shining through with this remastered version. It's one of those recordings that when you get to the end, you find yourself asking 'what the hell was that all about'? So you play it again to find out, and again, and again, and again. Dave Brubeck shook the musical world when these tracks were released in the mid to late fifties. Fifty years on another generation are discovering the pure genius that was Dave Brubeck, be one of them.Read full review
