After seeing David Mitchell in many television shows and enjoying his self effacing yet strongly opinionated style, I decided it was worth learning more about the man behind the personality. After reading his memoir Back Story I did indeed learn quite alot the man and also some bonus information about different locations around London. The book is told in a roughly chronological order and pays as much attention to his early life and what made him as it does his public persona. (possibly moreso). David's style of writing is similar to his spoken delivery, so if you enjoy his ranting about certain subjects you will enjoy this book. It's quite an information dense book and took me a solid two days of mostly reading to finish, so reading at a casual pace this memoir will keep you entertained for a good while. The reviews on the back cover both mention how honest the writing is but I would have hoped so considering it's an autobiography. Having said that David has clearly bared his soul or soft underbelly to potential ridicule, but it's the sort of book someone who couldn't stand him couldn't read enough to glean these painful truths so it balances out I guess (whatever that means). I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to fans of David and to people who wish to gain an insight in what makes a thoroughly British man.Read full review
