Delia Smith and Mary Berry, two of the best in their field as far as I'm concerned. I particularly like this book, not just for the recipes, but for all the information Delia has packed into it. The pastry making section is especially interesting to me. Clearly written, well laid out with easy to follow instructions. Excellent.

I bought this book as a gift for someone moving into their first flat. I have a copy of the book at home which I use regularly. Delia's cookery course is an excellent cookery book. Buy it at once! The book doesn't just tell you what ingredients you need and a rough guide as to how to assemble them into something vaguely edible. Delia assumes no prior knowledge of cookery at all. If you have never even seen a pan you will be able to cook healthy, wholesome food perfectly if you follow the instructions. An example is that most cookery books say "...leave to cool," Delia says "...take out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire cooling rack." Yes, you do end up reading a lot more but she tells you exactly how to cook the meal, exactly what you need and the equipment you will use. She also has (almost) every conceivable recipe you could ever need. You wont ever be able to cook a dinner party for 12 heads of state, but almost. If you want to know how to boil an egg for breakfast, bake a malt loaf for supper or anything in between, THIS is the book you need. Buy it, right now.Read full review

I received my book in good time which was great but on opening the book was not the same edition as the picture but more importantly it had been defaced with the word SL*T on it. I couldn't believe it! It looks like it has been on the book for sometime so although I doubt it was directed at me it's disgusting. It doesn't change the contents of the book but that's not the point!
