Video quality excellent with both Region 1& 2 DVDs. Audio quality- played red book CDs, HDCDs and SACDs. Most modern DVD Players have excellent video reproduction! None I have heard come near to this one on all forms of audio playback. If you are looking for a DVD Player and not too bothered about Bluray then this has got to be near top of the tree. Had a Bluray player and unless you compressed the audio signal it was far too much in a small house. You either were straining to hear the dialogue or shaking the walls when there was an explosion.

If you're happy with 5.1 surround, have a large library of CDs and standard-definition DVDs and you're looking for both a quality DVD player and a hi-fi CD player, this machine will serve both purposes admirably. The DVD-2930 contains DACs and surround processors of awesome quality, both of which are audibly better than their counterparts in my Denon AVR-1910. So when listening to music, whether stereo or multichannel, I usually make the amp use the multichannel analogue outputs from the DVD player rather than process the digital stream itself. When playing complex material such as orchestral music, jazz, progressive rock or other complex arrangements you will be rewarded with a detailed and spacious sound stage where each instrument's presence is easily discriminated. Frequency response goes right up to 100kHz so you will miss nothing. SACD and DVD-Audio in particular are stunning on this machine. The only downside is that if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 speaker setup, in bypassing your amp's digital electronics the additional rear channel(s) will remain silent, as the analogue outputs from the DVD-2930 provide only stereo and 5.1. However, the 5.1 sound field output from this machine is so encompassing and detailed you will hardly notice. The benefits are noticeable even using the 5.1 side surrounds as music rears, but for the very best effect if you do have rear surrounds I recommend that you use your amp to assign the rear channels to those when playing multichannel music. Find a surround recording of The Eagles' Hotel California or the bootleg Alan Parsons Quad mix of The Dark Side of the Moon, spin it up on this machine and you will be simply blown away. As for Video: I am still using a standard def screen so I can't comment on the HDMI output. However Denon have thoughtfully provided an RGB SCART output, which you won't find on all high end DVD players and the picture coming out of that is as good as my 61 inch Sony rear projection TV is capable of displaying. I know most of you will be using more modern screens so I will leave it at that. I certainly have no regrets at all with respect to my purchase, it's just what I wanted and I am listening to a lot more music since I got it.Read full review
