The invasion of time
The Doctor is back on Gallifrey where he in counters not only the Sontarans but the Vardans as well and the Doctor becomes the new president of the supreme council of time lords and a with the help of K-9 constructs the ultimate weapon to save Gallifrey to save his home world from the Sontarans a great classic story that is lots of fun.

Tom Baker did plenty of episodes better than this
BBC Videos decision to release "The Invasion of Time" when they did is no surprise. They've known for sometime that the re-designed Sontarans were making a comeback in the David Tennant series of "New" Doctor Who, and with their eye on the boxset market, realised that this story is the only Sontaran-related episode yet to be released - Pertwee's "The Time Warrior", Tom Baker's "The Sontaran Experiment" and Colin Baker's "Two Doctor's" story having already been released, this story makes for the full themed set around the domed potato-headed cloned monster race. One of the biggest questions in 1970s "Who" was why a cloned race such as the Sontarans felt the need to develop vid-phone technology, when a mirror would suffice just as well! That said, the Sontarans changed quite a lot even in ... BBC Videos decision to release "The Invasion of Time" when they did is no surprise. That said, the Sontarans changed quite a lot even in the early days of the show, even their number of fingers was subject to change. Even amongst clones, there seems to be quite a lot of differences in height and build depending on who is acting under the monster suit. One of the extras on this DVD is called "The Elusive David Agnew", a featurette on the "writer" of this show, in actuality a 1970s BBC pseudonym used in much the same way as the US writer/director "Alan Smithee", where the finished product is so different from the writers original intentions and been extensively rewritten that the writer asks for his name to be removed from the credits. In this instance "Agnew" is Who producer Graham Williams and script editor Anthony Read, who hastily had to write this six-part conclusion to the 1978 season when another story fell through. Esentially this is two stories in one - the first four parts feature the Vardans, while the Sontarans don't arrive on the scene until part five. The story is more notable now for being the last to feature Louise Jameson as warrior woman Leela, and although K-9 also departed the show in this story, a hastily re-written scene at the end shows the Doctor unpacking a crate that contains "K-9 Mark 2", such was the popularilty with the robot mutt among the audience. The actors and the procuction team hated the character, not least because the radio-controlled prop never worked properly, and even nearly 30years later when the character returned opposite David Tennant and Elizabeth Sladen in "School Reunion", the bugs still hadn't been worked out! This serial almost never got made due to industrial action at the BBC. A year later the same fate would befall another story, "Shada", but this story wasn't so badly affected, though some of the acting and effects are poor. The DVD restoration team have been at this story trying to improve a lot of the laser effects and the infamous 'tin foil' Vardans (you can view either the original aired episode or the improved one with new effects which is done well), but there is not much they can do about the low production values in general - the TARDIS corridor/chase scenes in part six look like they were shot in a disused hospital (they were) and look completely out of place. Louise Jameson in particular is known not to have liked the way her character was hurredly married off at the end of the serial. I have to agree with her. It's not as if this is the best Sontaran story ever made either. All involved could and should have done a lot better than this. One for the fans, which if you're like me means you'll probably already buy it anyway just to complete your DVD collection, no matter how bad a reputation it has!
