Worth seeing
In the main I think that Graham Williams was bad for Doctor Who as a producer (The Horns of Nimon was so bad that I stopped watching the programme for a while) but The Invisible Enemy was in his early days when his stories tended to be better and the story is entertaining enough, if far from original. K9 and Company works quite well and the interaction between Sarah-Jane and K9 is good. The worst thing about the programme was the theme tune and I am not sure which is worse between that and Doctor in Distress! Overall there is much better Doctor Who out there, but this is worth getting, to see the introduction of K9 as much as anything. 2Entertain and BBC video should be ashamed of themselves for letting a DVD get out to the shops with a serious authoring problem on one of the discs. By the time they got around to a recall, thousands of discs had already been sent out and sold, which means a lot of them will still be out there and waiting to be discovered weeks, months and even years after the original release date. There is supposedly an address to write to in order to get a replacement, but how quickly they will send one out is still unknown. Personally, I'm still waiting for a reply to my email to tell me where to send my faulty disc too! Not impressed, BBC. Not impressed at all. So just what is the problem? In the grand scheme of things it's nothing major and the serial is still largely watchable, but one wonders how on earth the episode was authored like this and managed to leave the factory in the first place. Now that it has, copies of this dodgy DVD could be being hawked around cyberspace by various retailers for the rest of eternity. Not all of the first pressings of this disc will ever get properly recalled and replaced. You'll just have to hope that you are one of the lucky ones, or if not, that 2entertain finally make some kind of official announcement of where to send your disc for a replacement. So that's the major DVD production error out of the way. What of the episodes themselves? "The Invisible Enemy" is known today for being the debut story of K-9. Grange Hill's Mr. Bronson (Michael Sheard) is in it as well as a guest star. The model-work and special effects is by and large impressive (even more so with the new CGI improved effects), all except for the Nucleus which is pretty much just a giant prawn. But that is 1970s Doctor Who all over. Writers like Bob Baker & Dave Martin had all kinds of great ideas but just didn't seem to know where to stop and what the BBC could actually afford to put onscreen convincingly. Some effects work and some don't. That's par for the course in this period of the shows history. At least K9 has a good debut. The 1981 Christmas Special spin-off "K-9 and Company" begins a chapter that wouldn't be completed until some 25 years later when Elizabeth Sladen would finally get her own spin-off show "The Sarah Jane Adventures". This is mostly just a 50 minute story about witchcraft in the English countryside with a journalist and her robotic dog. If it had gone to a series, we'd probably have been treated to yet more pagans or mad scientists with just the odd alien menace thrown in to break up the monotony. Like 1970s Jon Pertwee stories then, only not as good. Chances are, the only reason the BBC threw this story together in with "The Invisible Enemy" as a boxset is that they knew no-one would buy it if it was released on its own. And certainly at the moment, no-ones going to buy a two disc set where the main event has been authored incorrectly and is subject to a major product recall. I repeat. The producers of this boxset should be ashamed of themselves. They've let the whole Doctor Who product range down by releasing something that should never have got out the factory. I hope the person responsible gets fired, preferably at the business end of K-9s laser gun.

A good classic story
I bought this just for the invisible enemy, which I think is a good alround story, a bit cheesey at times but the story is ok a rip off of the fanstic voyage but its ok the extras are good.
