I have to say the Hinchcliffe era is one of the most enduring childhood moments for me, the stories were always so rich and varied. Aping most of there source material but with an ingenuity that was always fun and flamboyant. Planet of Evil is such an episode its source is 50's sci fi classic "forbidden planet." It process's a lot of that movies sense of endanger but as always imbues it with a great story that is more than the sum of its parts. The effects always a mute point are really great on here. It's a finely paced piece of classic television that sometimes feels slightly flat, but with the mega force that is Tom Baker it never gets totally dull. And its got a great twist in the tail. Perhaps not as classic as say Hand of Fear, its deservedly a good Dr Who because of a wonderful script and the set for the planet which is cinematically the best I've seen in this era.
