Reviews4 stars out of 5 - "...the New Orleans appropriation of California psychedelia, dressed up in Mardi Gras finery and spiced like a gut-busting gumbo....it's everything you want in voodoo music...", "This uniquely possessed album took psychedelia to an equatorially humid, sensual place it's rarely since visited...", Ranked #143 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "A swamp-funk classic. GRIS-GRIS blends New Orleans R&B, voodoo chants and chemical inspiration.', "A set of music that seemed to come from a place far stranger and more haunted than the ribald R'n'B sides he'd been cutting since the late 1950s."
Back in 1970 (I think) in a field in Somerset (was it an early Glastonbury?) in dawn rain we watched Dr. John and amazing band playing a semi acoustic set (due to the rain) or through PA system or something that was safer...(I 'm not a technician) which was absolutely riveting and I personally consider his most exciting period in his long and wide musical career. His next album Babylon too was wonderful with Glowin' that still for me resonates....but I have to state that there seemed to be a strange production noise that was intrusive on some tracks. That night and early morning...what with The Birds playing a less electrified set as well, was one of the finest in my youth...not too many people; most having hitched with doss bags slung over shoulders...and most of us not knowing or concerned about where we were...and you can interpret that! I 've bought this cd for a young teacher to realise that great music has been, is, and will be so long as there is a world to play and listen to it on! Peace and out, Jeff.
